Creativity in the new educational contract for the 21st century

The aim of this article is to discuss education for the 21st century through the dialogue between the proposal for a new educational contract by Nóvoa (2009) with creativity. It begins by focusing on the urgent guidelines of education for this century, giving rise to the proposal for a new educational contract based on three premises: education as commonweal, education centered on learning and the advancement of knowledge and socially shared education. Then, creativity in education is discussed, by emphasizing the role of divergent and flexible thinking to foster a more dialogical and plural education. Finally, propositions were elaborated from the dialogue between the new educational contract and the contributions of creativity in the field of education. It is concluded that the welcoming, liberating and shared education will need to be based on creativity and flexibility of thought, providing the advance of knowledge and opening to plurality.
