Abstract

Antonio Arruda Carneiro Leão (1887-1966) was a Brazilian teacher and educator. Among his many activities in Education, this article emphasizes his role as the head-teacher of French at Colégio Pedro II and the person responsible for implementing the direct method for teaching foreign languages during the Francisco Campos Reform carried out by the Brazilian Federal Government in the Education Reform. This text aims to show how the process of reform of foreign languages was constituted in a singular way through his pedagogical actions as head-teacher of French. The methodology used is bibliographic and documentary in a qualitative way. We conclude that Carneiro Leão identifies the direct method as a solution for modernizing foreign language teaching in the 1930s. Consequently, due to their actions undertaken in the reform, currently, foreign languages have assumed the condition of guaranteeing the set of essential knowledge to the students for the approximation of other cultures and their integration with the globalized world.
