This study is the result of the first phase in an ongoing investigation on research as a pedagogical principle in the Professional and Technical Secondary Education context, focusing on the integrated courses at the Federal Institutes, and aiming to map and analyze what has been published in terms of scientific knowledge in Doctoral Dissertations and Master Theses. As a methodological procedure, a search in the CAPES journals portal was carried out using the keywords: "research as a pedagogical principle", "research as an educational principle" and "research within the school”. Altogether, 9 studies were selected for the analyses. This phase in the study revealed the modest production on the theme nationally, as well as the conceptual inaccuracy regarding the understanding of research as a pedagogical principle. It also pointed to the need of expanding the discussion on the topic, since such a concept is central to the proposal of a comprehensive human development.
