Abstract

People with disabilities face significant difficulties in the transition to adulthood, including obstacles to education, employability, independent living, social development, and access to ongoing support. This paper studies the benefits of a support program for people with disabilities in Portugal, the Sintra Inclui+ Program, focusing on labor and community inclusion. Focus groups were held with 13 people with disabilities who received support from the program and six representatives of employers who welcomed them. The results highlight the importance of support in promoting these people's personal, social, and professional development. Young people recognized their ability to learn work functions and personal and social development. Employers highlighted their ability to learn and adapt, which changed perceptions and expectations about workers with disabilities. This support proved essential for creating more promising prospects, reinforcing the motivation and persistence necessary to build a professional career and an active life in the community. The study suggests that programs such as the one studied effectively promote the inclusion and self-determination of people with disabilities and should be implemented early at school and continue immediately after compulsory schooling. Results are discussed, and implications for practice and research are provided.
